TTM Success: Dick Perez

I didn't do a great job keeping track of my ttm requests near the end of last year. I got this card back from artist Dick Perez sometime in December, but I'm not sure of the specific date and I also don't know when I sent it, but my guess is that it took about a month.

Dick Perez is probably most well known for his work for Donruss and the Diamond Kings cards. You can see that he was honored with a card of his own. I know of at least one other Diamond King card that features him, but it's a checklist and the picture of him is really small.

Baseball cards featuring someone, or something, other than a baseball player are fairly common these days, especially with Allen & Ginter, but this 1994 card is an early example of a card in a baseball set featuring a non baseball player.

Can you think of an earlier card in a baseball set that features someone other than a baseball player or official (I know there are cards that have featured league presidents and the commissioner)?

  1. Great question. Don't have an answer... but I hope others do. As for Mr. Perez... I've been looking for an autograph of his for awhile now. He (and his DK's) will always be associated with my childhood collecting years.

    1. Like I said, he was pretty quick ttm. If I come across this card again I'll pick it up for you.

  2. The only ones I can think of are the SP cards that were inserted into 1991 & 92 Upper Deck. Michael Jordan was shown in a White Sox uniform (this was 3 years before he played in the Minors) and Tom Selleck was on a card with Frank Thomas for the Mr. Baseball movie. So an actor and a basketball player, though both are featured in baseball uniforms so it's different than the Perez.

  4. Love that Perez! Seems like there may be some early cards that had Presidents throwing out the first pitch. then again, I am usually confused. I bet NO would know or Nick.

    1. You might be right on the Presidents. I'll have to look into it.

  5. 1955 Bowman had umpires. Officials, they are, but not league executives.

    1. Very true! I hadn't thought about those, but yeah there are some in the 1955 Bowman set.

  6. I never knew this card existed! I lost track of DK cards a bit once they became an insert set.
