I recently mentioned the increased popularity of baseball cards as evidenced by empty retail shelves and a Mike Trout selling for $3.84 million. But not everyone out there returning to the hobby or entering the hobby in 2020 is in it for the money. Some are true collectors.
Jay, from Card Hemorrhage, returned to the baseball card hobby ahead of the curve last year, but he entered the baseball card blogging world in 2020. He reached out to me about a trade and we exchanged addresses and sent each other packages.
Jay knocked a couple of cards off my Most Wanted list with these two 1988 Kmart cards. Just need the McGwire to finish off that set.
There were also some other oddball cards included. Jack Clark was Jay's favorite player as a kid and Rennie Stennet was another favorite, so I hope these were doubles.
There Negro League Baseball Stars cards are fantastic and from 1986 Larry Fritsch Cards.
The John Amalfitano and Derrel Thomas cards are from the 1975 SSPC set. And I have to be honest, I had to do some research to figure out the Rennie Stennett card is from the 1981 All-Star program. How cool is that!
Finally, Jay included a smattering of other D-Backs cards.
I was really excited when the D-Backs traded for Starling Marte in January 2020. Then I was saddened to learn that his wife passed away of a heart attack in May. Then the D-Backs traded him to the Marlins on August 31st after playing just 33 games with the Diamondbacks as part of the Covid shortened season. The Marlins made the playoffs, but Marte suffered a broken hand in the first game and is out indefinitely.
After such a sad story with Marte, let's finish up with some fun cards. Thanks for the trade Jay. If you aren't following Card Hemorrhage go do that now.
Love that Ketel Marte with the mascot.
ReplyDeleteI only learned recently that those early to mid 80's All-Star Game programs had sheets of photos that could be cutout. I've owned the 1984 one for years, but thought that was the only one. Found out that Rickey has a 1981 card from that program and have been looking for an affordable (under $10 shipped) for about a month on eBay.
