2022 Card Shop Adventures #2

I left the card show on Saturday and traveled about a mile to the Batter’s Box card shop. I always enjoy browsing even if I don’t buy much. That was the case today.

I did almost buy a 1993 SP set with the Jeter rookie card, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger for some reason, even at $250. I might go back for it, but my guess is that it will be gone quickly. I’m now regretting not grabbing it.

In the end I only purchased 4 cards. The first three were a quarter each.

This next one was really interesting. It was in a small case of 50 cent cards.

I’m a Munson fan and grab his cards whenever I see them cheap, so this, at 50 cents was a no brainer for me. I think it’s really well done and it looks even better in person.

Here is the back. I tried searching online to see if I could come up with anything about the artist, but I came up empty handed. I did send an email address to the email address on the back, but as of me posting this, I haven’t gotten a response back. Let me know if any of you happen to know anything about this card or the artist.

When I was checking out I asked the owner about it and he said it was just in a collection that they purchased.

The only other thing I bought at this card shop was this pack of sleeves for graded cards. I don’t typically buy graded cards, but I bought two graded items this week, so I figured I should get these bags to protect them. My next couple of posts will feature the graded items I got this past week.

So what do you think? Did I mess up by not grabbing the 1993 SP set? I've wanted that card for a long time. It's a good price, but is it too good? I get nervous about cards like that because I know there are some fakes out there.

  1. I can't see spending $250 on a 1993 set, let alone one card. I had no idea the Jeter was going for that much. Assuming there is a market correction within the next year or two, you were likely right to pass on buying that set now.

    1. Yeah, it went up significantly about a year before he went into the Hall and then over the past two years the card has just skyrocketed. It's actually coming down a bit now.

  2. Sweet quarter buys. I probably only spend $250 a year on cards, so it's hard to see plopping that all down on a set. I'm interested by Bo's assumption of a market correction soon. I kind of hope so, I would love to see some cool cards come down into my price range.

    1. Yeah, prices in general have gotten really high, but I think some are coming down a bit right now. I think there are certain cards that will just remain high, but the majority will come back to levels we saw before the pandemic.

  3. That Lou Boudreau quarter card is a pretty sweet looking card. Next to dime boxes, I enjoy going through quarter boxes too.

    1. At a quarter each I will pick up all the 1960's Fleer cards I can get my hands on.

  4. I agree, I can't see myself dropping that much on a set also!

    1. It is certainly pricey and it's really just that one card that has any significant value. It's going to be very hard to bite the bullet if I do decide to pick that one up some day.

  5. I know that I'm out of the loop as far as how much things are selling for goes, but damn, that seems like an awful lot of money to spend just for that particular set. I could be wrong, but I can't imagine that it'll be holding that kind of value in the long-term.

    1. It's just that Jeter RC. It is so condition sensitive that it commands a huge premium.

  6. That Jeter is a cornerstone card for most Jeter collectors... which is why the set is so expensive. I stopped looking for a copy of that card years ago. If I found a clean set for that price and I knew someone who could look at the card and assure me it was legit, I probably would buy the set. But if I just walked into a random shop and had to just go on faith, there's no way I'd take the chance.

  7. Any chance you could email me when you hear of a card show on your half of the valley? I didn't even know this show happened.
