$2 well spent, I think? (Plus a CONTEST reminder)

I picked up this 2011 Topps GARY CARTER Topps 60 Memorabilia Card at my local card shop last week for $2. I saw the price tag and couldn't say no. I could buy one 2011 Topps pack and risk not get anything good or, for the same price I could get a bat card of Hall of Famer Gary Carter. On the front of the card, under the bat piece it says "GAME-USED MEMORABILIA". On the back it says "You have recieved a certified TOPPS 60 MEMORABILIA CARD from 2011 Topps Baseball Series 1". In really small print under that it says "The relic on this card is not from any specific game, event, or season." My question is, was the relic from a specific player, namely Gary Carter? What happened to the good old days when on the back of the relic card it would state something similar to "The enclosed piece of bat is certified to have been used by XYZ player in an official Major League game."?

2 out of a Million

I got my Million Card Giveaway cards from Topps yesterday. I had about 30 or so cards in my account, but decided that only 2 were worth the cost of shipping. The cards are miscut, but I was pleased with the overall condition of the cards.

Trade with Moe

Moe, over at My 2008 Topps Set Blog, sent me some D-Backs cards as part of a recent trade between he and I. He said he would send a Brandon Webb jersey card and a few other Diamondbacks, so I was surprized to see a Matt Williams auto on the top of the stack when I pulled it out of the bubble mailer. He sent over a few Webb cards in addition to the jersey and some other D-Backs as well, including a near complete 2002 Keebler Arizona Diamondbacks set. Thanks Moe!

Only two Spring Training autographs, but they were good ones!

I mentioned in a post yesterday that I had been given some free tickets to todays Dodgers - Cubs Spring Training game at the Dodgers and White Sox Camelback Ranch Stadium. I took the day off work and went to the park early to try to get some autographs and watch a little practice before meeting up with my wife and kids for the actual game.

I struck out in regards to current players, but I did get a couple of autographs from some Dodger greats. Don Newcombe, the only player in Major League baseball to have won the Rookie of the Year award (1949), Cy Young award (1956), and Most Valuable Player award (1956), rolled up in a golf cart and signed for a good 20 minutes. I was about the 5th person in line and got him to sign a ball which I think turned out great! Thanks Mr. Newcombe!

Mr. Tom Lasorda had a table set up where he signed autographs for everyone who wanted one. To be honest, he wasn't very nice about it though. He was rushing people through the line and making snide comments about everthing and everyone. I got him to sign the postcard below. I had written to the Dodgers back in the early 90's and they sent back a couple Tommy Lasorda postcards. I happened to come across them the other day and so that's what I took with me.

So I was a little disappointed that I wasn't able to get Kershaw, Kemp, or Looney, all of whom signed for a few people, but I wasn't able to get. Mattingly didn't sign at all today and Ethier wasn't even there. I could have gotten autographs from others like Rick Honeycutt, Ivan De Jesus, Jamey Carroll, and Jonathan Broxton, but I didn't have anything for them to sign. Next time I'll have to be more prepared.

Just when I'm ready to get rid of it all...

Every once in a while I get this thought in my head that I want to downsize my collection. You know, have a binder and a couple of boxes with only those cards that I would consider part of my "Personal Collection". Then an opportunitty presents itself that makes me change my mind. I posted a couple of weeks ago about former knuckleballer Tom Candiotti appearing at a couple of Sports 620 KTAR events in the Phoenix area. I went a few Saturdays ago and gave him 6 or 7 cards and had him sign 9 cards for me. Well this past Saturday he was appearing in the parking lot of my local card shop, AZ Sports, so I decided to dig through some more of my cards to see if I could find any more for him to sign. I was able to find a few more. Okay, 13 more to be exact. So between the 2 visits I had him sign 22 cards for me and gave him 6 or 7 for him to keep. If I had downsized my collection, I would've missed out on that opportunitty. A couple of you out there left a comment the last time asking to trade. I'll respond to you soon individually to set up a trade if you're still interested.

He remembered me from before and was really friendly. One of the guys from KTAR also remembered me and gave me 4 tickets to the Dodgers vs. Cubs game tomorrow, so I took the day off and will get to enjoy, if it's not raining, a Spring Training game with the family. I plan on going early to try to get some autographs. A co-worker of mine gave me some free tickets to the Padres vs. White Sox game tonight so we're going to that game as well. It's been raining all day today so I don't know how it'll go and am not planning on trying to get any autographs tonight. Just going to enjoy a ball game with my wife and kids. I love this time of year!

Pack Break: 2011 Topps Heritage Jumbo Pack

I picked up a 2011 Topps Heritage Jumbo Pack at Wal-Mart this past Thursday. The pack states "16 CARDS PACKS WITH A RELIC CARD CONTAIN 15 CARDS". Well what does it mean when a pack contains 17 cards? Scroll to the bottom of my post to find out. Here is what I got.

I think that my 17th card was one of these Heritage Refractor Paralle cards that are numbered to 562 and are supposed to be inserted 1 in every 24 packs according to the back of the wrapper.

Trade Bait

I'm looking for 2011 Topps Gold (#'d to 2011) and Black (#'d to 60) cards of Arizona Diamondbacks in trade. If you see something that you are interested in and have D-Backs Gold or Black 2011 Topps cards, then make me an offer. Thanks!
