I need a response from EVERYONE, please.

I have a question for the blogosphere and I'd like a response from everyone.

When was the last time you bought a Beckett magazine?

Just a little clarification. My question is regarding a current issue of the magazine. So for example, in June I bought 5 old Baseball Beckett magazines from 1991. This isn't what I'm asking.

I want to know the last time you bought a Beckett during the month that it was published.

For me it was February 2010.

If you don't remember, your best guess will do, just let me know that it is a guess.

I'm expecting that some of you will have bought a Beckett this month and for some it will have been much longer than me.

To thank you for participating I'll randomly select one person for every 10 answers and send them some cards as a thank you!

  1. early 1992. About the last time it was ever even close to relevant.

  2. I think I bought one in late 2013, shortly after I got back into the hobby.

  3. Never. Ever since I got into the hobby my thought process was "why pay money I could use on cards on a magazine about cards?"

  4. There was a time when I bought Beckett every month, but those days are long gone. I think the last one I purchased new was probably around 2009.

  5. Last time I bought a Beckett was probably 1994 or 1995.

  6. I used to love reading them up at big box stores and/or bookstores when I could without actually buying the magazine - the last time I actually bought one was probably in 2008.

  7. The last issue I bought was March 2012 because it had a story about sketch cards. Before that was probably about 2007 or 2008.

  8. June 1995, Kenny Lofton cover. I don't remember exactly where/why I bought it, though. I had been out of actively collecting for a couple years. I think I was just curious about the post-strike value of my cards.

  9. I had a subscription when I returned to the hobby in 2008... so my guess is probably 2009. Although this cover looks awfully familiar. Maybe it was 2010.

  10. I think April of this year or may as it had Benintendi on the cover. Prior to that, probably 2013/4.

  11. At least 5 years...can't really remember.

  12. Never. ... Or back when it was Baseball Cards Magazine if you're counting that.

  13. 2010 when I got back in the hobby.

  14. December, 2016... But that was the first copy I bought in 4 years...

I used to be at the card shop every month to pick up the new issues as it hit the stands, but that hasn't happened since around 2002...

Becket isn't what it was 25 years ago...

  15. Never. I subscribed to Baseball Hobby News for years back in the day, and bought the occasional issue of Baseball Cards then as well, but I got out of the hobby before Beckett came out, and I've read a bunch of articles from them in Barnes & Nobel or whatever during my hiatus and since I got back but never bought one.

  16. I subscribe to BSCM currently but it ends in Nov. I was going to put up a post about it cause I am thinking about ditching it after being a long time subscriber.

    1. Nobody uses Beckett much for its price guides anymore especially when it comes to trading
    2. Prices have gone up
    3. The same stuff they put in there you can pretty much find all over the Internet

The prices going up again have played the biggest factor in my decision and the repeat news I could post myself. Guess it's the con of being anymore blogger and having Internet access

  17. I haven't bought one since middle school or so... I'll take a stab and say 1992.

  18. I tried looking for it and couldn't, but I'm guessing late 2009, when I was actively collecting TTM and I saw an article on that in the all-sports edition...

  19. You can take Night Owl's response and paste it under my name. Never.

  20. I think I grabbed one in 2015, just to keep track of which rookie cards still were worth money.

  21. I think my last subscription ended in the summer of 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 2001 or 2002. I wasn't aware it was actually still a printed publication.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Honestly, never. I don't need a magazine to tell how much my cards are worth. They're worth the value that I assign to them.

  24. I would have to say the mid 2000s, maybe 2003ish. But I do look at issues in the book store when they have the newest issues.

  25. Man!! I think I had a donut for breakfast this morning?? and you want me to think back HOW FAR!!!
I had a subscription to Beckett Racing back when NASCAR was still a real sport! probably mid to late 90s. A quick google search shows me most of the covers that I recognize are from 1995...
For current value/pricing I look at eBay's sold listings, that at least tells me what ballpark people are paying to play in...

  26. I've never been a subscriber or even frequent purchaser, but I think I may have bought one around 1997/98.

  27. Used to get one about once a year for reference, but not pricing. Now that Trading Card Database is around, I haven't needed Becketts for that either.

  28. I bought a digital copy in December. It's not the same as it used to be.

  29. My brother and I would buy Beckett's every so often but I would say late ninties would be the last Beckett that I've bought.

  30. I’m guessing 2002. Going through all my Becketts lately, I noticed how nice earlier issues looked. There were more articles and color photography – full page shots of players. So much advertising by the end of the 90s!! I do have an online price guide subscription (but not to the magazine itself) to track my collection, using it as a database. I think Beckett is becoming irrelevant with today’s online shopping habits. Prices are harder to track due to volume. I’ve watched prices climb for cards out of the 90s (Donruss Elite etc) selling for much more than BV. I'm sure most of us pay whatever we think is fair for the card we want. I haven't used the guide to shop since I returned to the hobby. Great question Daniel!

  31. I bought the Beckett baseball magazine a couple of months ago because Kris Bryant was on the cover, and I wanted one to mark the Cubs' World Series appearance (I missed out if Beckett did one before)...before that, it was 3 or 4 years ago.

  32. Some time after the 2006 World Series. I bought one of those bigger "Plus" magazines because it had Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina on the cover. I don't even know where I'd buy one of their magazines these days.

  33. March 2011. I think a lot of people use EBAY pricing now if they need a guide.

  34. I would have to check the last issue I had from when I had my "second" subscription to it back somewhere close to 10 years ago? My first subscription was sometime back in the mid or late 1980s. For a few years I thought they had stopped making them because of all the internet online guides they have.

  35. June 2015. I wish there were more articles. The pricing data is useless to me.

  36. Last year. The Beckett Vintage Collector magazine is actually decent because it features articles. Last Beckett basketball I purchased was 2012. I hadn't read one since 2012 and I was disappointed to find they had ditched readers write and most of the articles. Replaced instead with price guide crap which I never ever read. The few articles were just whining about how Jeremy Lin cards weren't selling for as much as they did a few months previously. No history of the sport or cards was presented. I don't even remember who is on the cover, I threw it in a box in my storage unit, probably never to be seen again.

  37. Wow..... "Bought"? Early 90's I would guess. 1992 or 1993. I have a couple from the past two years, but I won those as prizes, so they cost me nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I wont pay $9.99 for an individual current Beckett, and I gave away just about every single back issue I had except for #1 last year. I simply pay the $36.00 annually and have them delivered to the house. So I get next months this month if you will.

  39. Wow - had not thought of that in a long time! I'd guess probably 1992 for baseball. I may have similar issues for football or hockey too from the same time too. I still have all my old issues too. Been wondering what to do with them all.

  40. Late 90s- had a subscription to the basketball magazine.

  41. I may have bought one in Dec 2015, but I don't remember. I know I picked it up a few times and put it back over a few card store visits and don't remember if I ever broke down and bought it. Before that it probably would have been 1993.
