Am I crazy for giving these cards away? Probably!

Hey there everyone!  It took me well over a year to complete this, but it was worth it! I now have a bat card of every member of the 500 Home Run Club. Here they are.

New additions to my 500 Home Run Club Bat Collection (Ruth and A-Rod)

Here are a couple of eBay purchases that I made last week, that I got in the mail yesterday. By adding these two, I now only need a Jimmie Foxx Bat Card to complete my 500 Home Run Club Bat Card Collection. The Ruth is the card that I posted about last week, saying that I had spent more on this single card than any other card since getting married almost 7 years ago. I had to put a bunch of cards up on eBay to please the wife. Okay, she wasn't really pleased, but at least she didn't kill me. I'm really happy about the Ruth card because it's the card that I wanted for this collection and I think that I got it for a great price. Now only one more to go.

Babe Ruth and Jorge Posada

Babe Ruth and Jorge Posada have several things in common. They both wore or wearYankee pinstripes. They have both won multiple World Series Championships. Ruth hit the first homerun in old Yankee Stadium and Posada hit the first homerun in the new Yankee Stadium. One thing I didn't realize that they had in common before finding both of their cards in a pack of 2010 Topps National Chicle was that they were the exact same height and weight, 6 foot 2 inches tall and 215 pounds.

I don't think I'm alone when I say that I always thought of Ruth as overweight, but I have never thought about Posada that way. I did a little research and found out that during the 1925 season Ruth weighed in at 254 pounds. During the off season he worked with a personal trainer and lost 44 pounds. He must have gained a few pounds back and settled in at 215 because everywhere I loked it listed him at 215 lbs.

Pack Break: 2010 Topps National Chicle

As part of my anniversary present, my wife got me 3 packs of cards (2010 Topps National Chicle, 2010 Topps Allen & Ginter, and 2010 Topps Series 2). Here is the pack of 2010 Topps National Chicle. The Ruth is probably the best card in the pack, but I really like the Mel Ott.

1992 Score "memorabilia" cards

And you thought the first baseball cards to feature memorabilia were the 1997 Upper Deck Game Jersey cards. 1992 Score featured a 5 card subset that showcased some pretty sweet memorabilia from some of baseball's all-time greats. Each card features memorbilia courtesy of the Barry Halper Collection. Imagine all that memorabilia owned by the same person. I have no idea what the combined value of all the memorabilia would be that is featured on all 5 cards, but I would gues that it is close to $1 million.

Baseball Cards in the News

I saw this title Officers who took sports cards punished on azcentral.com this morning when I brought up the internet. I had to check it out and thought I would pass it on. The article was written by Michael Ferraresi. Here are the first two paragraphs. You can click on the link to read the entire article.

"When the two officers found the baseball cards glued to a bedroom door at a foreclosed home in central Phoenix, they realized the potential value.

They saw a Babe Ruth, a Willie Mays and an Ernie Banks - legends whose collectibles are worth hundreds of dollars in mint condition. They used knives to remove 44 cards and eventually lost their jobs after admitting to swiping the abandoned property with the idea of making a profit on eBay".

The article goes on to state that due to the poor condition of the cards they were valued at around $20.
