Appreciating 1996 Upper Deck

Every once in a while I come across a card, or group of cards, that makes me really appreciate a particular set in a way that I hadn't ever before.

Such was the case when I recently went through a partial set of 1996 Upper Deck that I hadn't seen in almost 20 years.

Check out some great cards from the 1996 Upper Deck set.

Look at the photography.

Some more great photography. Literally.

I think Dante must have borrowed Zack Morris's phone.

Here's a "Bipping" on a single card.

Have you ever seen a card that captured second base being uprooted.

These next two are my favorite out of the whole bunch.

I've seen the big glove on cardboard before, but it's still funny to me.

I don't think I've ever seen this on cardboard before.

  1. I never used to like '96 Upper Deck, but seeing cards like these (and acquiring more and more on my own) has made me appreciate it a lot more.

I've had that Sojo card for a while and somehow never noticed the uprooted base until this post.

  2. Despite what I've always considered a questionable design (especially following the greatness of '95), this is a beautifully-photographed set. I like the card design of '97 more, and while '97 does still have a lot of fantastic photography, '96 is better in that respect.

  3. I didn't care for the large amount of copper foil used in the 1996 design, but I've always like Upper Deck's varied and high quality photography.
