A Baseball Great: 1961 Fleer Cap Anson

I'm in the market for some 1959 - 1963 Fleer cards for my Fleer binder. II picked up a few 1963 recently including the Wills rookie card and I have a couple of the Ted Williams cards and one or two from 1960, but I didn't have any from the 1961 Baseball Greats set.

There was a small stack of 61's in one of the cases at the card shop so I took a look and grabbed this one. I've actually had this card on my radar for years. Anson is a member of the 3,000 Hit Club and I have a collection of bat cards from all the the members of the 3,000 Hit Club, but Anson doesn't have a bat card, so my intention was always to grab this card. He played from 1871 - 1897, so he doesn't even have a T206 card. He does have original Allen & Ginter and Goodwin Champions cards from 1888, but I don't expect to add either of those cards to my collection any time soon, so the next oldest cards of his are from 1960 and 1961 Fleer. I prefer the 1961 design and photo choice for Anson to the 1960 card, which is why I picked up this card.

This is a great looking set and I'm looking forward to picking up a few more.

What do you think about the 1961 Fleer set? Do you have a favorite card from the set? Any particular cards I should be on the lookout for?

  1. I'll have to see if I even own any 1961 Fleer cards. Beautiful design. I just saw the 1999 insert of Tony Gwynn that features the same design over on jongudmund's .394 blog:
