2012 Card Collecting Goals

2011 has come and gone and while it was an exciting year for my family and I (first year of little league with my oldest, bought a new home, and had another baby - our third) my card collecting sort of slowed down due to a lack of funds and time. To help me turn that around in 2012, I decided to set some goals. I did that in 2010 and while I didn't reach all the goals I set, it was nice to have them to strive for and I really made progress in my collection. So, in no particular order, here are my 2012 Card Collecting Goals.

1. TTM Autographs - 50 TTM autographs this year from at least 30 different people. One thing that I plan on doing differently this year in regards to my TTM requests is expanding to sports other than just baseball. ***COMPLETED***

2. 3000 Hit Club Bat Cards - Collect a bat card of 27 players in the 3000 Hit Club. I achieved my 2010 goal of a Bat Card of every member of the 500 Home Run Club and have decided to try for the 3000 Hit Club. Several players are members of both clubs (Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, and Rafael Palmeiro) and I already have a Ty Cobb Bat Card, so I need 22 more.

3. Greatest Non Relic/Auto/Numbered/Parallel Insert Set of All-Time - I recently asked for suggestions for this and got some good ones. To clarify, this will be for baseball only. I plan to narrow the list down and select the greatest non relic/auto/numbered/parallel insert set of all-time and collect that entire set.

4. Cards Featuring Awards - In 2010 I started a collection of cards with players holding multiple bats, which I still add to. In 2012, I want to collect at least 50 cards featuring awards. This can be any award, Rookie of the Year, MVP, World Series trophy, etc., but the card must have a picture of the award on it, not just mention that the player won the award.

5. Dan Wilson Collection - Dan Wilson was a Major League catcher that played 13 seasons for the Cincinnati Reds and the Seattle Mariners. He is set an American League record for catchers with a .995 career fielding percentage and was an All-Star in 1996. My name happens to be Daniel Wilson, so I have always been drawn to collecting his cards, but haven't actively pursued his cards in years. I would like to complete a Trifecta (RC, Auto, and Game-Used) for him. I already have several different rookies, and a quick eBay search revealed several certified auto's but no game-used so that could prove difficult. ***COMPLETED***

6. Ryan Roberts Collection - Ryan Roberts had a breakout year in 2010 and is definitely a fan favorite here in Arizona. I met him at the All-Star Fan Fest and he is a super nice guy. Because he was not an everyday player until this year he actually has very few cards. He was included in the 2011 Topps Update Series and I collected as many of those parallels as possible. I haven't seen any of the 1/1's aside from two of the Printing Plates which I was able to get. I have a feeling that he will be included in a lot more product in 2012, so I definitely want to increase my collection of Ryan Roberts cards and so without knowing exactly how many cards he will have in 2012, I will set my goal at 25 unique Ryan Roberts cards for 2012. ***COMPLETED***

7. Brandon Webb Collection - In 2010 I set a goal to reach 200 unique Brandon Webb cards. After blowing out his arm on Opening Day in 2009 he has since signed with the Rangers but has not pitched in the Big Leagues. I'm not sure where he will end up in 2012. Right now I am at 196 different Brandon Webb cards in my collection, so I would like to reach 200 and see if I can add another 50 cards, bringing my Brandon Webb total to 250 unique cards by the end of 2012. ***COMPLETED***

8. Complete the 2004 Topps Derby Digs Jersey Relics Set - This set features pieces of jerseys worn during the 2003 Home Run Derby. I currently only have two cards from this set, Garret Anderson and Bret Boone so I still need Carlos Delgado, Jim Edmonds, Jason Giambi, Albert Pujols, and Richie Sexson to complete the entire set. ***COMPLETED***

9. Post Videos on My Blog and YouTube - Just this year I started watching YouTube videos of TTM successes, box breaks, eBay mail days, trades, etc. and have really enjoyed it. We got a web cam for Christmas so I want to start doing videos for my blog and YouTube in 2012.  ***COMPLETED***

10. Be More Active in the Blogging Community - I feel really fortunate to be part of this community and want to be more active in my posts, commenting on others posts, trading, etc. In 2011 I only had 96 posts compared to 231 in 2010. I would like to hit at least 300 posts in 2012. ***COMPLETED***

11. Vintage - I would like to add 10 solid vintage cards to my collection in 2012. In November I picked up a 1957 Topps Don Drysdale Rookie Card and it reminded me how much I love vintage cards. I have very few in my collection though. For me, when it comes to vintage cards, the condition is not all that important, in fact I think that a card that is 40+ years old should show some wear and tear.

12. Personal Collection - I would like to add 100 cards to my personal collection. These cards will include the 3000 Hit Club Bat cards, ttm autographs, the 10 solid vintage cards, 2004 Topps Derby Digs Jersey cards, in addition to relic, autos, numbered, rookie cards, etc. of either players I collect or Arizona Diamondbacks. ***COMPLETED***

13. Autographed Baseballs - I would like to get two baseballs autographed by star players this year. In 2010 I got Don Mattingly and in 2011 I got Don Newcombe to sign balls. Between D-Backs Fan Fest, Spring Training, the regular season, card shows/autograph signings, and the Fall League I would like to at least get two in person autographs of star players on baseballs. ***COMPLETED***

14. Organize My Collection - This will be a daunting task, but it needs to be done. I don't want any loose cards and I want to know where everything is at. Part of this will be deciding what to do with my Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza collections that I have from collecting growing up.

15. 1997 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. Game Jersey - One Griffey card that I would love to have and keep is the 1997 Upper Deck Game Jersey card. Along with Tony Gwynn and Rey Ordonez (which I already have), these were the first baseball jersey cards. I have wanted this card for a long time, but it rarely shows up on eBay and has always been out of my price range. I would like to figure out a way to get this card.

Hobby Question: What is the greatest non relic/auto/numbered/parallel insert set of all-time?

I'm working on a list of my own which includes the list below, but I wanted to hear from the blogosphere. In your opinion, what is the greatest non relic/auto/numbered/parallel insert set of all-time? Once I get a more complete list, I'll break each set down and rate them based on 5 categories (Set Name, Design, Player Selection, Innovation, and Impact on Collecting) and then crown the Greatest Non Relic/Auto/Numbered/Parallel Insert Set of All-Time!

eBay Pick-Up: 2010 Topps Triple Threads Chris Young Auto 37/99

I picked up this 2010 Topps Triple Threads Chris Young Auto 37/99 on eBay recently. The card features two orange jersey pieces and one bat piece along with Young's autograph. The back of the card does not mention the jersey, bat, or auto at all, which makes me wonder if the material and wood pieces are actually game used relics. In November I picked up a 2009 Topps Triple Threads card of Justin Upton that featured an orange jersey piece as well and I just can't think of the D-Backs ever having worn an orange jersey. It's possible that it's from an All-Star event or some minor league jersey, but it would be nice if Topps would let us know. Anyways, here's the Chris Young card.

Pack Break: 2011 Topps Chrome

For my Secret Santa gift exchange at work I got a rack pack of 2011 Topps Chrome. It was the package that has 3 packs of 2011 Topps Chrome and then a pack with 3 orange border parallels. Here are the contents. Everything is for trade except for the Crow and Hellickson. I am looking for 2011 Topps Chrome Diamondbacks in return. Let me know if you are interested. Crow was one of only two All-Stars this year that actually signed for me at the game and Helllickson won A.L. Rookie of the Year so his RC fits my Pookie Cards of Player who won Rookie of the Year collection.

 Pack #2

TTM Success: MVP and HOF

I got two ttm requests yesterday. First up is 1952 A.L. MVP, Bobby Shantz. Not sure exactly when I sent this request, but it was probably about a 7-10 days ago. Bobby was a 3 time all-star and 8 time Gold Glover. He also won a World Series with the New York Yankees in 1958. Thanks Mr. Shantz.

Next up, Hall of Famer Jim Bunning. I got this request back in 19 days. Bunning is a 9 time All-Star who pitched both a no-hitter and a perfect game. When he retired in 1971 he was second on the all-time strikeouts list. He is currently number 17. After his baseball career, Mr. Bunning went into politics and served as a Representative and a Senator for the state of Kentucky from 1987 - 2010. Thank you Mr. Bunning!

TTM Success: Dick Groat

I sent Dick Groat a ttm autograph request a week or so ago (not sure on the exact date) and today I recieved my card back in the mail, autographed by the 1960 N.L. MVP, Dick Groat. I actually sent him a ttm request last year and got the same card signed with a 1960 N.L. MVP inscription, but when I came accross this card again recently, I just had to send to him again, because, lets face it. These cards were ment to be signed. In my letter I asked him what his favorite baseball memory was and he responded by writing on my letter and sending it back. I've included his response below. Thanks Mr. Groat!

An Amazing eBay Seller: wpcgarciaparra

I purchased two auctions from eBay seller wpcgarciaparra back on 11/14. One was a 3 card PSA Graded 2010 Topps Peak Performance Gerrardo Parra Autographed lot and the other was a 4 card PSA Graded 2010 Topps Peak Performance Chris Young Autographed lot. I won each auction for $7.95 and shipping was $3.95. I contacted the seller about combining shipping and he did, $4.25 for all 7 cards. The total for everything including shipping was $20.15, which I paid via PayPal right away. I then waited for the cards to arrive. I waited and waited, but by December 2nd they had still not arrived. I contacted the seller, wpcgarciaparra, and let him know that I had not received the cards. He got back to me right away and apologized saying that he had not been able to do anything eBay wise and that his grandson was supposed to have been handling things for him. He asked me for my address and assured me that they would be in the mail the coming Monday. He apologized again and said he would "make it right". Today a package arrived and when I opened it I not only found the 7 cards from the 2 auctions that I had won, but also a $20 bill and a note from wpcgarciaparra, again apologizing. I was shocked! The cards are amazing and he refunded me my money. Thank you wpcgarciaparra! You certainly made it right, and I'll definitely purchase from you again! I did not expect such great customer service from an eBay seller. He has some great stuff up on eBay right now, so go check him out here.

Football TTM Success: Kurt Warner

When it comes to football, I'm an Arizona Cardinals fan and Kurt Warner is one of the greatest Cardinals players of all-time. In my mind, he will be in the Hall of Fame one day. He's also an amazing family man and a good role model. I sent him a letter mid November requesting an autograph and recieved this in the mail today.

Card and autograph look awesome! Thanks Kurt!

eBay Pick-Up: 2011 Allen & Ginter Daniel Hudson Jersey

I picked up this 2011 Allen & Ginter Daniel Hudson Jersey card on eBay last week. Because I was purchasing mutliple auctions from the same seller (I'll show the other cards I purchased soon) it didn't cost anything extra for shipping, so I got this card for $3.00. I've wanted it for a while to go with the 2011 Allen & Ginter Daniel Hudson Auto (shown below) that I picked up back in July.

ebay Pick-Up: Brian Wilson Leather Nameplate

This was a spur of the moment ebay pick-up. I did a search of all baseball cards ending soonest and I saw this card and knew I wanted it. It only had a few minutes left and didn't have any bids yet, so I bid $0.99 and got it. $3.49 total with shipping. My last name is Wilson, so I just thought it looked cool. Now I need to get the black leather version.

eBay Pick-Up: Justin Upton Triple Threads Auto

I have been getting some great cards on eBay recently. Here is a 2009 Topps Triple Threads Rising Stars Justin Upton Auto numbered 90/99. The card features 2 bat pieces behind the "#1" and the "CK" and an orange jersey piece behind the "PI". I'm not sure when Upton has ever worn an orange jersey. I'm thinking it must have been from a 2009 All Star weekend event, but I'm not sure. The card looks great though and it is my first J-Up auto, so I'm really excited.

I was actually trying to get the version that is numbered to 50, but lost out at, literally, the last second of the eBay auction. It went for $19.01, plus shipping. After missing out on that one, I did a quick search and found this one. I has about three days left. The starting bid was something like $44.95, but it had a best offer option. I put in a best offer bid of $15 and put in a little note stating that the one numbered to 50 had just sold for $19 and I included the item number. I was still a little surprized that my offer was accepted since the starting bid was so high. Shipping was $2, so I got it shipped for $17.

NL Cy Young Award Winner Auto

I picked up this 2009 Toops 206 Clayton Kershaw auto from my local card shop today. I was looking at his certified autographed cards on eBay recently and I think that I should be able to flip this card for a little profit. I like the blue border, since he is a Dodger, and the fact that is it an on-card auto is also nice. I checked on eBay when I got home and I don't think this particular auto listed at all, so I will get it listed tomorrow and see if I can make enough to cover the two other cards that I bought for my kids today at the card shop.

Black Friday Mailday

Two eBay packages came in the mail today. First up was this 2011 Topps Marquee Titanic Threads Stephen Drew Jumbo Jersey Card. This is a sweet card! It's numbered 56/99 and I got it for $3.49 shipped.

Next up is a group of 8 different auctions that I won from the same seller. It was $1.00 shipping for the first card and free for each additional auction. I won this 2010 Bowman Platinum Jeremy Hellickson Rookie Card and then spent an additional $0.07 for the other 9 cards. So for the 10 cards listed below I paid $1.57 shipped.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! I have a wonderful wife and three amazing boys! I have a strong faith and a wonderful extended family. I have a great job and work with some great people. And then there's baseball. I'm grateful for MLB, baseball cards, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the blogosphere, trades, eBay, relics and autos, rookie cards, my PC, and sweet cards for under $5 bucks. With that said here are a few recent sweet eBay pick-Ups for under $5 bucks that I am thankful for.

2011 Topps Update Justin Upton Hope Diamond /60 ($3.04 shipped)

2011 Topps Update Justin Upton Black /60 ($3.66 shipped)

2011 Topps Chris Young Silk /50 ($3.99 shipped)

TTM Requests Sent

This is more of a reminder to me as far as when I sent out some TTM requests. Today I sent out requests to Don Baylor, Jim Bunning, and Phil Garner. I sent a request to Kurt Warner last week, but other than that, I haven't sent out any TTM requests in a while. Hope to get some more TTM requests sent out and see some results in the coming weeks and months.

Starting A Collection For My Kids

I mentioned in a post last week that I am trying to see if my boys have any interest in baseball cards. I tool them with me to the card shop and told them they could each have $2 to pick out a card. My oldest is 5 and a half and my middle boy is almost 4. I flipped through the cards in the $2 relic/auto box and my oldest son picked out this 2000 Fleer Showcase Sweet Sigs JOSE CRUZ JR. Auto.

My other son, kept picking out cards in the showcases that he liked and I had to keep explaining that he only had $2 to spend and that most of the cards he was looking at were way more than $2. Finally he saw some 2007 UD Masterpieces Jersey Cards that he liked. There were several that were $2 (Jason Bay,etc.), but I helped him pick this Craig Biggio Captured on Canvas Jersey card, which was $3 so that he would have a future Hall of Famer relic card for his collection.

I bought them magnetic cases (which cost almost as much as the cards) for their cards so they can keep them nice and display them. They seem somewhat interested in cards and I'm going to see if I can pick up a few quality cards for them for Christmas to try and help build them a nice collection.

Carl Everett wants YOU...

Carl Everett wants YOU....
to know that there were some great photos used in 2004 Topps. He also wants you to help me decide between two different collections to pursue. First up are three great looking cards that I found while looking through a box recently.

Next up, help me decide which collection to pursue. Dan Wilson player collection (you see, my name happens to be Dan Wilson, so I feel obligated to collect him). I came across this card in the stack of 2004 Topps and it renewed that sense of obligation.

Or, my other thought is, and has been for a while to collect cards featuring players with awards/trophies that they have won. They are out there, but aren't very common, so it would make it a fun challenge. So there you have it, Dan Wilson or Trophies, or both?

Card Shop Pick-Up

I'm assuming that I'm going to be preaching to the choir here, but how come my wife doesn't understand that if our family goes to Dairy Queen for a tasty treat and I choose not to partake, then I should be able to spend a few bucks on baseball cards. It seems like a pretty simple concept to me, but every time a situation like this occurs she gets really upset. I just don't get it. I could have spent money on item A, but I choose not to. Instead, I choose to buy baseball cards.

Yesterday we were out and about and decided to go to Dairy Queen, which happens to be close to my local card shop. I told my wife that I didn't want anything at Dairy Queen, but that I would like to stop by the card shop and pick up a card that I had seen there just a few days earlier. I got "the sigh" and "the rolling of the eyes" from her and "the talk" about how I am spending too much money on baseball cards. So, without further ado, here are the cards I got at the card shop.

2003 Bowman Chrome Brandon Webb Rookie Card - I was pretty sure I didn't have this one already and for $0.75 it was too cheap to pass up. After getting home, I checked and I did not already have this one, so that puts me at 195 different Brandon Webb cards.

1996 Leaf Signature Series Al Leiter Auto - I was watching a Roberto Clemente tribute on MLB tv the other day and they featured Al Leiter because he was one of the winners of the Roberto Clemente Award. I had seen this in the $2 box the last time I was at the shop and wanted it.

So there you have it. I spent a whopping $2.75 at the card shop, which is about what my wife spent on her Dairy Queen blizzard. Maybe some day she will understand, but I doubt it.

eBay Pick-Up - Don Drysdale RC

I picked up this 1957 Topps Don Drysdale Rookie Card on eBay and it arrived today. It's a PSA 2, which is why I was able to afford it. Even with it being graded at a 2, I think that it's in pretty good shape for being over 50 years old. With older cards I don't mind if they are not in perfect shape. I might try to see which other Hall of Fame rookie cards from the 50's I can pick up for around $25.

Card Shop Pick-Up and a Question

Yesterday I took my two oldest boys, Kolby 5 and Brady 3, to the card shop. I'm trying to get them into collecting, so I told them that they could each have $2 to buy their very own card. My 5 year old picked out a really cool auto with his $2 and I was able to finally help my 3 year old pick out a jersey card of a future Hall of Famer. I'll post their cards soon. I picked up this 2009 Topps Unique Dual Distinction David Wright / Jose Reyes jersey card numbered 89/99 for $2. The Wright jersey is red and the Reyes jersey is gold. My question is, what jersey do you think these pieces are from? I'm thinking maybe an all-star game weekend jersey, but I'm not sure. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Free Baseball Cards from Swag Bucks

A while back I stumbled onto a website call swagbucks.com. After signing up, which is free, you can earn Swag Bucks by searching the internet, participating in daily polls, watching videos, etc. You can redeem your Swag Bucks for a variety of prizes including gift cards, video games, and baseball cards. Like I said, it's free to sign up and I just use the search function instead of Google and you randomly earn Swag Bucks with that and then I also get 1 Swag Buck each day from the daily poll. It took my about a month or so, but I earned 680 Swag Bucks and redeemed them for a 1981 Topps Jack Perconte/Mike Scioscia/Fernando Valenzuela rookie card. The card came today (free shipping). I scanned it. It's not a gem mint card, by any means but it is in decent shape and it is 30 years old. Click on the link on the top right hand corner of my blog if you want to sign up. If you sign up through this link then I get credit for it. Check it out and earn some free cards!

Look ma...no hands!

Ryan Roberts x4

I picked up these 4 Ryan Roberts 2011 Topps Update parallels on eBay, and they all came this week. I haven't bought any packs of this years Update, so I still need the base and diamond parallel. If anybody out there has them for trade, let me know. Thanks!

Is Justin upton a 5 Tool Talent?

Topps thinks Upton is a 5 Tool Talent and I agree. I picked this card up on eBay recently and got it in the mail today. Who are other current players that you consider to be 5 Tool Talents?

Justin Upton x 2

I picked these cards up separately from different sellers on eBay this past week, but received them both in the mail today. The one on the left is numbered to 60 and I got it for $4.75 shipped. The card on the right is the regular version and I got it for $4.00 shipped. $8.75 for both is not bad if you ask me. I'm picking up singles from this years Update and trying to stay away from packs and boxes. I'll have some more cards to post soon that I picked up on eBay.

Ticket Stub eBay Pick-Up

I've picked up a few things on eBay this past week and they are starting to arrive in the mailbox. Here is a ticket stub that I picked up for a total of $4.99. You might be asking yourself, "Why would he pay 5 bucks for a ticket stub from a meaningless game between the Brewers and the Diamondbacks from 2010?" Well, let chek out the description from the eBay auction which states "Neat vintage full ticket in excellent condition. From a game in which Daniel Hudson pitched for the win and home runs were hit by Stephen Drew and Prince Fielder." You might still be asking yourself, "Why would he want this ticket?" The eBay seller mentioned the hom run hit by Stephen Drew, but what he didn't mention was that the three D-Backs batters before Drew also hit home runs. That's right Adam LaRoche, Miguel Montero, Mark Reynolds, and Stephen Drew hit back to back to back to back home runs in that game. My plan is to try to get the ticket signed by those 4 players.

More on the Mantle Autograph

I bought this Mickey Mantle autograph from a card shop back in 1999 or 2000. The card shop had recently purchased a large collection from someone and this was part of it. It came with a Certificate of Authenticity (which I haven't been able to find since we moved back in July) and a picture of the guy with Mickey Mantle at a card show. The card can be seen on the table in front of Mantle. So while it appears that some of these cards were autographed by Mantle and sold by Upper Deck, I don't think that this one was. It appears that it was bought unsigned and that Mantle signed it at a card show.

I recently notice a serial number and stamp on the back of the card. It card be seen on the bottom left hand corner. I can't make out any of the writing in the circle. I'm assuming this is from the company that provided the certificate of authenticity. Is anyone out there familiar with this stamp/company? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mickey Mantle Autograph - Real or Fake?

Take a look at the card above and give me your honest opinion of whether or not you think the autograph is real or fake. The card itself was produced by Upper Deck in 1994 and measures 3.5" x 5".

I've had this card for over 10 years and have always wondered whether or not it's legit. Not because I don't trust where I got it from, but because of the huge number of Mantle forgeries out there. I'd like to get everyone's opinion and then I'll provide a little more information about where I got it from. Thanks!

Catching Up

I have posted sparingly over the past several months. I haven't had the funds for any new cards recently, but I did add a few baseball related pieces to my collection.

My brother and his family came to visit from Las Vegas back in July. He brought this Bryce Harper autographed Sports Illustrated for me. I've mentioned before that my brother and his family know the Harper family a little bit and they go to the same church. This Sports Illustrated was donated for an auction at the church to raise money for one of the youth groups. I guess he had had it for several months but this was the first time that I had seen him in a while. I was really excited. I know a lot has been said about Bryce and I'm sure there will be plenty more said, but I still was thrilled to get this.

This Ryan Roberts signed 8x10 was given to my in September by a co-worker. Her and her boyfriend had gone to a signing at a local at&t store and got to meet Roberts. This 8x10 was provided by at&t. Since they had 2 of these, they gave one to me. The photo is surprisingly nice for a store giveaway and I actually like the fact that it has the at&t logo on it because it lets you know where it's from.

My family and I went to the D-Backs game on September 24th and I got this Ryan Roberts bobblehead. We got there several hours early and there was already a huge line, so we went inside for a while and let the kids play on the playground and then took off before the game even started. My wife is pregnant and so I knew going into it that we wouldn't be staying, but we had the tickets already and I wanted the bobblehead. It's up on my D-Backs bobblhead shelf and makes number 13.

I got this Mike "Human Rain Delay" Hargrove bobblehead from a local event here in Goodyear, AZ called G.A.I.N. (Getting Arizonans Involved in Neighborhoods). The Indians and Reds always have a booth at the event because it takes place at the Goodyear Ballpark where they have Spring Training. My five year old actually won this for me by playing a beanbag toss game.
