This happened recently with this 1994 Topps card of Juan Gonzalez.
I picked this card up because I liked the photo on the front; including the doughnut.
I didn't realize until I went to scan the card that this is actually a Pre-Production Sample card.
Notice the statement "Design and photo selection subject to change." Here is the actual 1994 Topps card.
Which one do you like better? The Pre-Production Sample or the actual base version?
Anyone collect Pre-Preoduction Samples? I have a few and think I might start a little mini collection.
I think I prefer the Pre-Production card front and the actual base card back. I don't collect these, but mostly just because I hadn't ever thought of it before. If I found one that matched up with one of my player collections, I would buy it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on liking the pre-production front and the regular back.
DeleteCount me in this camp. I think those two would make the pairing.
DeleteSometimes I wonder what special things I would find in my own collection if I really took the time to look over each card. I don't know that I have promo cards lurking about, but I'm sure I have image variations that I never noticed.
Definitely prefer the sample card...now I need to go find one for myself.
ReplyDeleteIt was definitely a nice find. $0.65 on comc right now.
DeleteI'm a promo kind of guy, so I'll go with the Pre-Production Sample. Having worked at a card shop in the late 90's, I had access to tons of 90's promo cards. In the early 2000's, I dumped the bulk of my collection... but kept a 660ct. box filled with them. I've shown off my Gwynns once or twice. Maybe one day, I'll get around to documenting the entire collection.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! Would love to see some of your promo collection and see how they compare to the actual cards.
DeleteOh man. That's a cool find!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was surprised when I turned it over to scan it and saw the Pre-Production Sample part.
DeleteI prefer the pre-production card. There was a little 9-pack included in 1993 factory sets and I've seen it so many times, the "real" card looks out of place to me.
