Hall of Fame Friday - Ted Williams

The career numbers for Ted Williams are staggering and he missed three full seasons and parts of two others due to military service. If you project out his career stats factoring in the missed time he would rank sixth in hits, fourth in home runs, and first in RBI.

Williams wore the number 9 throughout his career. Let's take a look at 9 Ted Williams cards from my collection.

What's a Larry bird?

When I was a kid we were playing a game where you had to describe the name/phrase without saying any part of the word(s) and try to get your teammates to guess what you were describing. My grandmother got stuck on one when the time ran out. She frantically asked the group, "What's a Larry bird?"

She had no idea who Larry Bird was and thought it was a type of fowl that she'd never heard of before. Everyone else got a good laugh.

Now every time I see or hear Larry Bird, I think of that story.

I recently came across a Larry Bird baseball card. Yes, you heard correctly...a Larry Bird baseball card. It's a promo card from 1994 Ted Williams featuring Bird playing baseball at Indiana State.

I also got these two other promo cards from the 1994 Ted Williams set.

 

These came from a 15/$1 box and I picked up 6 of each, so if you're interested in any of these let me know. 

2003 Upper Deck Play Ball Ted Williams Tribute

While technically part of the 2003 Upper Deck Play Ball set, the 15 card Ted Williams Tribute set were seeded 1:24 packs.

 It took me well over a year to complete this, but it was worth it! I now have a bat card of every member of the 500 Home Run Club. Here they are.

Dealing with the consequences

I made a purchase today on eBay that gets me one huge step closer to finishing one of my card collecting goals that I set for myself in 2010. I don't want to say what it was that I purchased because I want it to be in hand before I post about it. The problem is that I had to spend more money than I have spent on a single card in a long time (since before I was married). I was able to justify the purchase by having listed several cards on eBay myself in an effort to keep my wife from killing me. So, I thought I would do a little advertising for my stuff on eBay here on my blog. I have 17 cards up on eBay right now so below you can find a sampling of what I have up.
