1952 Bowman: The Old Professor

More 1952 Bowman today. I couldn't say no to this Casey Stengel card, creases and all. This is a great card and sure beats his 1952 Topps card. Oh, that's right. Topps didn't feature a Casey Stengel on a baseball card until 1959.

I have two questions for you. First what is the bracelet that Casey is sporting? Second, what do you think Casey was shouting?

Alright, one more question. Was Casey a great manager or was he just blessed with great teams? Answer one, or answer all three. If you answer all three, I might send you something.

  1. A. He's sporting a bracelet his daughter made him at summer camp.

    B. He's yelling at a young Mantle to take the 3-0 pitch, because the Yankees are up by 7 runs in the top of the 8th.

    C. He was a great manager who was blessed with great teams :D

  2. A. I think it's a watch

    B. He's directing the outfielders where to position

    C. I think his personality overshadowed his managerial prowess. He had some big stars and played in a weak league, but he was effectively innovative in his use of platoons and the bullpen.

    Fantastic card!

  3. A. Yeah, if you're asking for a serious answer, I agree with Bo, it's probably a watch. Looks a little thin, though, more like a woman's watch.

    B. He's calling everyone in for a meeting.

    C. I think he was a great manager, although he would have been a terrible GM. He pushed the early Mets to focus on catchers, leading to the questionable decision to make Choo Choo Coleman the first pick in the expansion draft, and the absolutely disastrous decision to take Steve Chilcott with the first pick in 1966, when everyone else in the world thought they should take Reggie Jackson.

    1. The Mets picked Chilcott because Reggie had a Latina girlfriend. Even Reggie has said it wasn't Casey's fault: https://metsmerizedonline.com/2013/10/reggie-jackson-says-mets-decision-not-to-draft-him-was-based-on-race.html/
