1971 or 1972?

I had some birthday money burning a hole in my pocket and so I ventured out this past weekend to a couple of card shops and and picked up a bunch of vintage cards.

I grabbed an off centered 1971 Topps Reggie Jackson and a fairly decent 1972 Topps Reggie Jackson in an effort to complete a run of base Topps Reggie Jackson cards.

The prices you see are the prices I paid. I feel like it was a fair price, plus I'm close to completing the run. This gives me 1969 - 1979 and 1981 - 1987. I just need the 1980 Topps card, although my 1986 card is part of the set, so I would like to pick up an additional one for the Reggie collection.

Once I get the 1980 card I'll do a post on the 1969 - 1987 run of cards. Part of me wishes that his rookie card was the final card I needed, but another part of me is glad that it's a card that will cost me just a few dollars.

I like both cards, but the 1971 is far superior to the 1972 in my opinion. The black borders and the photo of a clean cut Jackson kneeling, holding multiple bats over his shoulder, blow the 72 card out of the water. How about you, which one do you like best?

Reggie Jackson

Today is Mr. October's birthday. Someday I'll own a 1969 Topps Reggie Jackson rookie card. It will go in a magnetic card holder. The rest of his base Topps cards will fill these first two pages.

Next up are the rest of the Reggie Jackson cards I own. Every time I fill up another page I'll add it to this post. 

A 10 Card, 9 card Set

I'm not sure why card companies don't produce more 9 card insert sets. They fit perfectly into 9 card sheets. 18 works. So does 27 and 36. Not many insert sets are going to be bigger than that, but you get the point.

The worst is when an insert set is 10 cards. 1 full page and then 1 left over card.

In 1990 Upper Deck introduced the baseball card collecting world to it's Baseball Heroes set, which would continue over a couple different product lines from 1990 - 1997. They would resurrect the Baseball Heroes concept in 2002, but that was different.

Starting in 1990 with Reggie Jackson being cards #1 - #9, the set continues through 1997 ending at card #100.

The problem with the 9 card set is that there is also a not numbered header card, a 10th card.

But wait, the back of the Header Card even says that it's a 9 card set.

Vintage Trade Bait

I'm going to post a few vintage cards as trade bait for the 2004 Topps Derby Digs cards that I posted about yesterday. I need the Pujols and the Edmonds cards from that set to complete it. The condition on these vintage cards is far from perfect, but they are still pretty cool. I've had them since I was a teenager and really don't fit my vintage wants right now (I'm looking for beat up rookie cards of star players/Hall of Famers.) so I'd be willing to trade these cards for the Pujols or Edmonds. I'd also be willing to sell all of these cards for $30 shipped, which would allow me to pick up both the Pujols and Edmonds cards from the 2004 Topps Derby Digs set. 1954 Bowman Gil Hodges #138 - This is the roughest card in the bunch and features a tape stain as well as a crease accross the middle (not very visable from the front) and wear on the back of the card.

2002 Topps Tribute

I recently came across a small stack of 2002 Topps Tribute cards. I must have bought a few packs back when they first came out. The relic cards were nowhere to be seen, just the base cards. But they are some pretty nice looking cards of some of the games greatest players. Thought I would show them off.



Anyone ever had a "Reggie" bar?

I know that the Reggie Jackson inspired "Reggie" candy bar first appeared in the late 1970's. In 1993, to commemorate his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Clark (Candy Company) and Upper Deck teamed up to reissue the "Reggie" candy bar. This time each candy bar came with a Reggie Jackson Upper Deck baseball card. There were 3 different cards in the set, 2 of Jackson in New York (minus the Yankee logo) and 1 with Oakland (minus the A's logo).

I remember my Dad buying a big box of the "Reggie" bars at Sam's Club (or whatever it was called in 1993)  so I have 5 sets (4 extra) of the Reggie Jackson candy bar cards, plus a few other single cards. If anyone is interested in a set, let me know. First come, first serve. Just send me some D-Backs cards in return. Thanks!
