Same Photo, Different Companies

Yesterday I shared a couple of Topps cards that featured very similar photos of the same player from one year to the next. Billy Williams in 1967 and 1968 and Jim hunter in 1968 and 1969.

Along those same lines I noticed these two 1992 Barry Bonds cards while bindering, that's not a word is it,  my Barry Bonds collection as I try for 762 unique Bonds cards.

I realize this could be a different photo, but it sure appears to be the exact same picture to me. The lighting is a bit different. The shadows on the Topps card are a darker than on the Fleer card, but I think it's the same exact photo.

I got a couple of questions. What are the odds that it is in fact the same photo? If so, how did that happen? I would think they would have different photographers and if it was the same photographer I would think that they wouldn't sell the same images to different card manufacturers. If both Topps and Fleer use the same photographers and selling the same images to multiple companies is common practice, then how come we don't see it happen more often? Maybe that is the case and we just don't notice it.

Can you think of other examples of this happening?

  1. Definitely the same photo. No way to have the exact same shadow shapes. This has happened before. 1982 Rod Carew is the earliest I can think of.

Is a similar vein to his series on same, play different shot (though some of those look like the same shot)

My favorite same-play set is Mike Felder being used three times for the same moment (three different photos a split second apart) http://royalsandrandoms.blogspot.com/2013/01/mike-felder-and-his-moment-in-spotlight.html

  2. not the same photo, but taken split seconds apart. his right arm is in a slightly different position, and you can see different amounts of the "pittsburgh" on his jersey between the two photos.
i agree with nick that the 1982 fleer and topps in action carew cards were the first i recall of this phenomenon.

  3. I agree with GCRL; the wordmark on his jersey proves it's not the same photo. Also if you look at the left sneaker, there's daylight behind it on the Topps, while on the Fleer the back of that shoe is up against the right one. Still very, very similar.

The same Honus Wagner photo shows up in 1993 Upper Deck BAT Triple Folders (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/10305/cid/464489/1993-Upper-Deck-All-Time-Heroes-124-Honus-Wagner) and 2019 Topps Archives (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/202077/cid/13487781/2019-Topps-Archives-262-Honus-Wagner).

I remember Baseball Hobby News reporting on that double-sold Carew photo.

  4. The same photos on the '82 Carew cards were a case of the photographer selling the same photo to both Fleer and Topps. I've written about it before. ... I had to study those Bonds photos for a bit to spot the difference.

  5. If this is the exact same photo... it's been photoshopped at least a little. There's a little more grass showing between Barry's left heel on the Topps card... plus there seems to be a little more blue between his knees on his Fleer card. Either way, it's definitely a conversation piece.

Like Nick mentioned... I remember when Fleer and Topps used the same photo as Carew on his 1982 cards.
